My journey into photography began in my 50s after a vacation in Mexico, where I was captivated by the beauty of humpback whales but lacked the equipment to capture their magnificence. My passion lies in creating images that evoke memories or remind you of places you once called home. The world-famous mural titled "Saint Mungo" (though also known as Modern Day Mungo). It is located in Glasgow, Scotland, specifically on a gable end building on High Street, near Glasgow Cathedral. ???? The Artist and Style The mural was created in February 2016 by the renowned Australian street artist Sam Bates, who goes by the name Smug. It is part of the Glasgow City Centre Mural Trail, a collection of nearly 30 large-scale artworks designed to revitalize the city's streets. Smug is celebrated for his hyper-realistic style, which he achieves primarily using spray paint. ???? Meaning and Symbolism The mural is a contemporary reimagining of Saint Mungo, the patron saint and founder of Glasgow. * The Modern Figure: Instead of traditional religious robes, the saint is depicted as a modern-day Glaswegian in an anorak. Some interpret his appearance as that of a homeless man to reflect contemporary social issues and humanize the saint’s message of compassion. * The Robin: The bird on his finger refers to one of Saint Mungo's four legendary miracles: "The bird that never flew". According to legend, Mungo restored life to a pet robin that had been accidentally killed by his classmates. * The Halo: A subtle, glowing circle behind his head serves as a "discrete halo," signifying his saintly status despite his humble modern clothing.
