My journey into photography began in my 50s after a vacation in Mexico, where I was captivated by the beauty of humpback whales but lacked the equipment to capture their magnificence. People often ask about my photography style. I believe a photographer’s style is ever-evolving, shaped by continuous learning and new techniques. My passion lies in creating images that evoke memories or remind you of places you once called home. Architecture and History * The Bridge Structure: George IV Bridge is actually an elevated street supported by a series of massive stone arches. It was constructed between 1827 and 1836 as part of a major city improvement project to connect the Old Town to the south of the city. * Split-Level Design: Your photo highlights Edinburgh's unique multi-layered architecture, where streets literally run on top of one another. The archway you are looking through supports the main road above, while the street you are standing on provides access to the lower levels of the historic tenements. * The Ghost Bus: Perfectly timed in the reflection and on the bridge itself is "The Ghost Bus," a popular themed tour that explores Edinburgh's dark and macabre history. Location Context * Greyfriars Bobby: Just at the top end of this bridge sits the famous statue of Greyfriars Bobby and the entrance to the historic Greyfriars Kirkyard. * Literary Links: The bridge is also home to the National Library of Scotland and is a short walk from the Elephant House café, often cited as a birthplace of the Harry Potter series. * The Vaults: Some of the arches nearby, like those under South Bridge, contain the famous Edinburgh Vaults, which were once used as storage, workshops, and even illicit housing in the 18th century.
