Hello, I’m Hub Blanchette from Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada. My journey into photography began in my 50s after a vacation in Mexico, where I was captivated by the beauty of humpback whales but lacked the equipment to capture their magnificence. Upon returning home, I dedicated myself to learning the art of photography, studying under some of the world’s top photographers and investing in the necessary gear to capture stunning images in any situation. People often ask about my photography style. I believe a photographer’s style is ever-evolving, shaped by continuous learning and new techniques. As I gain experience and insight, my perspective on scenes and objects becomes more detailed and nuanced. My passion lies in creating images that evoke memories or remind you of places you once called home. My goal is to capture each scene in its best light, producing photographs that you would be proud to display in your home or office. ABOUT THIS ARTWORK: EQUESTRIAN STATUE OF THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON GLASGOW UK
The Equestrian Statue of the Duke of Wellington, located on Queen Street outside the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) in Glasgow. While it was built to honor a military hero, it has become a global symbol of Glasgow’s unique sense of humor. The History and the "Tradition" * The Subject: The statue depicts Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington, who famously defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. It was sculpted by Italian artist Carlo Marochetti and erected in 1844. * The Cone: For over 40 years, locals have engaged in a "tradition" of climbing the statue to place an orange traffic cone on the Duke's head. As your image shows, the horse often gets its own "ears" (cones) as well! * The Symbolism: What started as a late-night prank has evolved into a symbol of the city. It represents the "Glaswegian" spirit—irreverent, defiant of authority, and ready to laugh at even the most serious subjects. The Battle for the Cone The cone hasn't always been welcomed by officials. Here is how it became a permanent fixture: | Era | Status | |---|---| | Pre-2013 | The City Council and Police spent thousands of pounds every year using cranes to remove the cones, only for them to reappear days later. | | The 2013 Protest | The Council proposed a £65,000 plan to double the height of the plinth to stop people from climbing it. This sparked a massive "Keep the Cone" campaign and a petition with over 10,000 signatures. | | Today | The authorities eventually surrendered. The cone is now rarely removed, and the statue is frequently listed by Lonely Planet and TripAdvisor as one of the most bizarre or "top" landmarks in the world. | Global Recognition * The 2014 Commonwealth Games: During the games held in Glasgow, the statue (with its cone) featured prominently in the opening ceremony and official merchandise. * Banksy's Endorsement: In 2023, the world-famous street artist Banksy held an exhibition at the GoMA right behind the statue. He called it his "favorite artwork in the UK" because of the community’s dedication to keeping the cone in place.
